PRO number

Also: PRO · Progressive number · Tracking number (LTL)

A PRO number is the tracking and billing number an LTL carrier assigns to a shipment when it is picked up, printed on a label applied to the freight and on the carrier's bill of lading and invoice; it is the key to tracking the shipment and to matching the invoice to the quote.

Truckload freight is tracked by the truck; LTL freight is tracked by the PRO. The number identifies one shipment through every terminal and every hand-off in the carrier’s network, and it is what a shipper enters on the carrier’s website to see where the pallets are.

On the paperwork, the PRO ties three documents together: the carrier’s BOL, which gets the PRO sticker at pickup; the delivery receipt, which repeats it; and the invoice, which is issued by PRO. Auditing LTL invoices means matching each PRO to the shipment quoted, then checking that the class, weight and accessorials on the invoice match the quote and the BOL, and that any reweigh or reclassification is supported by the carrier’s inspection certificate.

Brokers moving LTL through several carriers end up with PRO numbers in several formats, some with check digits, some without, and a fair number typed wrong. It is one of the fields worth reading off the document rather than off a keyboard.
